Parent Code of Ethics

As a YATA parent or guardian, I commit to:

Supporting All Students

  • Celebrate the accomplishments of all participants, not just my own child.
  • Encourage growth, effort, and learning rather than comparison.
  • Recognize that every student contributes to the success of a production.

Promoting a Positive Community

  • Speak about students, families, directors, staff, and volunteers with kindness and respect.
  • Refrain from gossip, rumor-spreading, public criticism, or conversations that diminish others or their abilities.
  • Avoid comparing students or discussing casting or opportunities in ways that create division within the community.
  • Support artistic and educational decisions through appropriate channels rather than through speculation or public discussion.
  • Address concerns directly, privately, and constructively with YATA leadership.
  • Remember that children learn from the examples set by adults; model the respect, empathy, and professionalism we expect from our students.
  • Help create a culture where every family feels welcomed, valued, and supported.
  • Use social media in ways that reflect the values of YATA.
  • Support YATA’s mission and reputation.
  • Remember that children are watching and learning from the behavior of the adults around them.

Trusting the Process

  • Understand that casting, and production decisions are made with the best interests of the production and educational mission in mind.
  • Support directors and staff as they make artistic and educational decisions.
  • Address concerns directly and respectfully through appropriate channels.

Prioritizing Growth Over Recognition

  • Value the lessons, relationships, and experiences gained through participation.
  • Understand that theatre education is about personal development, not just receiving roles or awards.
